Loving What Is: Four Questions That Can Change Your Life

Loving What Is: Four Questions That Can Change Your Life

Out of nowhere, like a fresh breeze in a marketplace crowded with advice on what to believe, comes Byron Katie and what she calls "The Work." In the midst of a normal life, Katie became increasingly depressed, and over a ten-year period sank further into rage, despair, and thoughts of suicide. Then one morning, she woke up in a state of absolute joy, filled with the realization of how her own suffering had ended. The freedom of that realization has never left her, and now in Loving What Is you can discover the same freedom through The Work. The Work is simply four questions that, when applied to a specific problem, enable you to see what is troubling you in an entirely different light. As Katie says, "It's not the problem that causes our suffering; it's our thinking about the problem." Contrary to popular belief, trying to let go of a painful thought never works; instead, once we have done The Work, the thought lets go of us. At that point, we can truly love what is, just as it is. Loving What Is will show you step-by-step, through clear and vivid examples, exactly how to use this revolutionary process for yourself. You'll see people do The Work with Katie on a broad range of human problems, from a wife ready to leave her husband because he wants more sex, to a Manhattan worker paralyzed by fear of terrorism, to a woman suffering over a death in her family. Many people have discovered The Work's power to solve problems; in addition, they say that through The Work they experience a sense of lasting peace and find the clarity and energy to act, even in situations that had previously seemed impossible.

Big Fat Lies Women Tell Themselves: Ditch Your Inner Critic and Wake Up Your Inner Superstar

Big Fat Lies Women Tell Themselves: Ditch Your Inner Critic and Wake Up Your Inner Superstar

Most women have a nonstop chorus of criticism in their heads -- voices not unlike those of the mean girls lurking in the hallways and locker rooms of junior high schools everywhere. The grownup version of those teenage taunts -- "But taking care of myself is selfish" and "The world is against me" -- zap motivation, sabotage happiness, and keep women in a stressed, "never enough" mindset. Here, like a best-buddy, street-wise big sister, coach Amy Ahlers helps women talk back. Her witty, wise, and cut-to-the-chase format arms women with the "Take that!" insights they wish they had handy when someone puts them down -- even if that someone is the person in the mirror. Ahlers doesn't offer long-winded self-therapy or simplistic happy talk; she serves up straight talk that helps women know, feel, and tell themselves the truths that transform their deepest inner thoughts -- and their lives.

The Road Less Travelled

A Psychology of Love, Traditional Values and Spiritual Growth Confronting and solving problems is a painful process which most of us attempt to avoid. And the very avoidance results in greater pain and an inability to grow both mentally and spiritually. Drawing heavily on his own professional experience, Dr M. Scott Peck, a practising psychiatrist, suggests ways in which facing our difficulties - and suffering through the changes - can enable us to reach a higher level of self-understanding. He discusses the nature of loving relationships: how to recognize true compatibility, how to distinguish dependency from love, how to become one's own person, and how to be a more sensitive parent. This is a book that can show you how to embrace reality and yet achieve serenity and a richer existence. Hugely influential, it has now sold over six million copies - and has changed many people's lives round the globe. It may change yours.

Emotional Freedom: Liberate Yourself from Negative Emotions and Transform Your Life

Emotional Freedom: Liberate Yourself from Negative Emotions and Transform Your Life

A practicing psychiatrist, the author straddles the worlds of mainstream medicine and alternative healing; she regards emotions as a training ground for the soul, and views "every victory over fear, anxiety, and resentment as a way to develop your spiritual muscles." As the self is the foundation for emotional freedom, the author discusses how readers can find their emotional type--intellectual, empathic, rock or gusher--and suggests how to find balance. Her tips include avoiding "emotional vampires" or consulting dreams, which she divides into three types: psychological (where fears and neuroses express themselves), predictive and guidance. The second half of the book tackles the most difficult life challenges: depression, loneliness, anxiety, frustration, rejection, grief, envy and bitterness. Orloff addresses each fully and frankly, using anecdotes from her own life and practice--the death of her mother, her own crippling envy. This insightful and positive book will assist anyone who is suffering in mapping a path out of pain.

Boundaries: When to Say Yes, How to Say No, to Take Control of Your Life

Boundaries: When to Say Yes, How to Say No, to Take Control of Your Life

Having clear boundaries is essential to a healthy, balanced lifestyle. A boundary is a personal property line that marks those things for which we are responsible. In other words, boundaries define who we are and who we are not. Boundaries impact all areas of our lives: Physical boundaries help us determine who may touch us and under what circumstances -- Mental boundaries give us the freedom to have our own thoughts and opinions -- Emotional boundaries help us to deal with our own emotions and disengage from the harmful, manipulative emotions of others -- Spiritual boundaries help us to distinguish God's will from our own and give us renewed awe for our Creator -- Often, Christians focus so much on being loving and unselfish that they forget their own limits and limitations. When confronted with their lack of boundaries, they ask: - Can I set limits and still be a loving person? - What are legitimate boundaries? - What if someone is upset or hurt by my boundaries? - How do I answer someone who wants my time, love, energy, or money? - Aren't boundaries selfish? - Why do I feel guilty or afraid when I consider setting boundaries? Dr. Henry Cloud and Dr. John Townsend offer biblically-based answers to these and other tough questions, showing us how to set healthy boundaries with our parents, spouses, children, friends, co-workers, and even ourselves.

Man's Search for Meaning

Man's Search for Meaning

When Beacon Press first published Man's Search for Meaning in 1959, Carl Rogers called it "one of the outstanding contributions to psychological thought in the last fifty years." In the thirty-three years since then, this book - at once a memoir, a self-help book, and a psychology manual - has become a classic that has sold more than three million copies in English language editions. Man's Search for Meaning tells the chilling and inspirational story of eminent psychiatrist Viktor Frankl, who was imprisoned at Auschwitz and other concentration camps for three years during the Second World War. Immersed in great suffering and loss, Frankl began to wonder why some of his fellow prisoners were able not only to survive the horrifying conditions, but to grow in the process. Frankl's conclusion - that the most basic human motivation is the will to meaning - became the basis of his groundbreaking psychological theory, logotherapy. As Nietzsche put it, "He who has a why to live for can bear almost any how." In Man's Search for Meaning, Frankl outlines the principles of logotherapy, and offers ways to help each one of us focus on finding the purpose in our lives. This new edition of Man's Search for Meaning includes a new preface by the author, in which he explains his decision to remain in his native Austria during the Nazi invasion, a choice which eventually led to his imprisonment. It also includes an updated bibliography of books, articles, records, films, videotapes, and audio tapes about logotherapy.

Don't Let Your Emotions Run Your Life (New Harbinger Self-Help Workbook)

Don't Let Your Emotions Run Your Life

Many of us know the helpless predicament of losing control of our emotions. We may not be clinically "crazy" but instead "high reactors," experiencing overpowering feelings that knock us off balance, plunge us into depression, make us fly off the handle, or terrify us without warning. We can anticipate, understand, avoid and replace these "high reactions" by applying the methods of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). DBT is an eclectic mix of cognitive-behavioral techniques, skills training, Zen, and existentialism, that has been honed for the treatment of the highest reactors among us--those with Borderline Personality Disorder. Author Scott Spradlin uses proven DBT techniques, worksheets and assessment exercises, to teach us to pay attention to emotions when they arise, assess our blocks to controlling them, and finally overcome these blocks and eliminate overpowering feelings. We learn what emotional triggers exist in our environments, become less judgmental about ourselves when we do experience a surge, and avoid or reduce the distress that emotions cause us. This workbook ultimately equips us to reduce the impact of painful feelings and increase the effects of positive ones so that we may tolerate life's ongoing stresses and achieve a sense of calm co-existence with our emotions.

Feel the Fear and Do it Anyway

Feel the Fear and Do it Anyway

The author asserts that people's lack of decisiveness, whether in respect of work, relationships, money or life in general, is attributable mainly to fear. She claims that fear prevents them from doing what they really want and need to do in order to grow and achieve a sense of well-being, and that holding back through fear causes feelings of confusion, self-doubt, frustration, anger and helplessness. The aim of the book is to offer readers a path of re-learning, by means of which they can get rid of faulty thinking, feel the fear and push through it to turn anger into love and indecision into action.

A New Earth: Create a Better Life

A New Earth: Create a Better Life

According to Tolle, who assumes the role of narrator as well, humans are on the verge of creating a new world by a personal transformation that shifts our attention away from our ever-expanding egos. This idea is well realized through Tolle's remarkably well-paced narration. Naturally, the author understands his material so thoroughly that he is able to convey it in an enjoyable manner, but Tolle's gentle tone and dialect begs his audience's attention simply through its straightforward approach. Something about this reading just seems profoundly important, whether one agrees with the material or not, and listeners' attention is sure to be captured within seconds of listening to Tolle's take on the universe in which we live. Originally released in 2005, both book and audiobook were reissued when Oprah Winfrey chose the title for her book club this year. A Penguin paperback. (Feb.) The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference

The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference

"The Tipping Point" is the biography of an idea, and the idea is quite simple: that many of the problems we face - from murder to teenage delinquency to traffic jams - behave like epidemics. They aren't linear phenomena in the sense that they steadily and predictably change according to the level of effort brought to bear against them. They are capable of sudden and dramatic changes in direction. Years of well-intentioned intervention may have no impact at all, yet the right intervention - at just the right time - can start a cascade of change. Many of the social ills that face us today, in other words, are as inherently volatile as the epidemics that periodically sweep through the human population: little things can cause them to "tip" at any time and if we want to understand how to confront and solve them we have to understand what those "tipping points" are. In this study, Malcolm Gladwell explores the ramifications of this. Not simply for politicians and policy-makers, his method provides a way of viewing everyday experience and seeking to enable us to develop strategies for everything from raising a child to running a company.

Intuition is not some magical property that arises unbidden from the depths of our mind. It is a product of long hours and intelligent design, of meaningful work environments and particular rules and principles. This book shows us how we can hone our instinctive ability to know in an instant, helping us to bring out the best in our thinking and become better decision-makers in our homes, offices and in everyday life. Just as he did with his revolutionary theory of the tipping point, Gladwell reveals how the power of blink' could fundamentally transform our relationships, the way we consume, create and communicate, how we run our businesses and even our societies. You'll never think about thinking in the same way again.

Health Through God's Pharmacy: Advice and Experiences with Medicinal Herbs

Health Through God's Pharmacy: Advice and Experiences with Medicinal Herbs

This book shines in that its from someone with so much experience and love for nature, so much assurance and honesty regarding what she does. Finding advice for malignant diseases is uncommon in general herbals, so that was welcomed here. I was a bit put off by so many cautionary "see your doctor first" comments, as I didn't expect that HERE with this one, but I can let that pass. I'd have loved for this to be longer, though, telling more on the conditions with more details. It's pretty short and because of that not too much can be relayed. For the length that's here though, it's great. I'm eager to check out her other books for comparison.

The Continuum Concept

The Continuum Concept

"The Continuum Concept" introduces the idea that in order to achieve optimal physical, mental and emotional development, human beings - especially babies - require the kind of instinctive nurturing as practiced by our ancient relatives. It is a true 'back to basics' approach to parenting. Author Jean Liedloff spent two and-a-half years in the jungle deep in the heart of South America living with indigenous tribes and was astounded at how differently children are raised outside the Western world. She came to the realisation that essential child-rearing techniques such as touch, trust and community have been undermined in modern times, and in this book suggests practical ways to regain our natural well-being, for our children and ourselves.
